जलवा बकदर-ए-ज़र्फ़-ए -नज़र देखते रहे
क्या देखते हम उनको मगर देखते रहे !
jalwaa baqadar-e-zarf-e-nazar dekhte rahe
kya dekhte hum unko magar dekhte rahe
[jalwaa = light/illumination , bqadar = With dignity , zarf: receptacle , zarf-e-nazar = holder of the the vision (eyes) , bqadar-e-zarf-e-nazar = dignified eyes]
I kept looking at the light from those dignified eyes
what could have I seen, but still yet I kept looking

अपना ही अक्स पेश-ए-नज़र देखते रहे
आईना रु-ब-रु था मगर देखते रहे !
apna hi aqs pesh-e-nazar dekhte rahe
aaeena ru-ba-ru tha magar dekhte rahe
[aqs = reflection, pesh = in front, pesh-e-nazar = in front of the eye, aaeena = mirror, ru = face, ru-ba-ru = face to face]
I saw my own reflection in front of my eyes
mirror was in front and I kept looking

क्या कहर था की पास ही दिल के लगी थी आग
अंधेर है की दीदा-ए-तर देखते रहे !
kya qahar tha ki paas he dil ke lagi thii aag
andher hai ki deeda-e-tar dekhte rahe
[qahar = tyaranny , andher = darkness, deeda-e-tar = moistness of eyes ]
what tyaranny it was that the fire engulfed in front of the heart
its dark and despite moist eyes I kept looking

लाख आफताब पास से हो कर गुज़र गए
बैठे हम इंतज़ार-ए-सहर देखते रहे !
laakh aaftaab paas se ho kar guzar gai
baithe hum intazaar-e-sahar dekhte rahe
[aaftaab = sun, intazaar = awaiting, intazaar-e-sahar = awaiting for dawn ]
hundred thousands of sun passed by me
sitting there and awaiting the dawn, I kept looking

उनकी हरीम-ए-नाज़ कहाँ और हम कहाँ
नक़्श-ओ-निगार-ए-पर्दा-ओ-दर देखते रहे !
unki hareem-e-naaz kahan aur hum kahan
naqsh-o-nigaar-e-parda-o-dar dekhte rahe
[hareem = abode, naaz= pride/dignified/elegance, hareem-e-naaz = abode of one with elegance (beloved), naqsh = drawing, nigaar = decoration/embellishment, parda = curtain, dar = door, naqs-o-nigaar-e-parda-o-dar dekhte = drawings and embellishments of doors and curtain]
where is the abode of the dignified and where am I,
those drawings and embellishments of the doors and curtain, I kept looking

ऐसी भी कुछ फ़िराक की रातें गुज़र गयीं
जैसे उन्ही को पेश-ए-नज़र देखते रहे !
aisi bhee kuch firaaq kee raatein guzar gayeen
jaise unhi ko pesh-e-nazar dekhte rahe
[firaaq = seperation]
such nights of separations have passed by me
In front of my my eyes it was and I kept looking

है दौर-ए-बेदिली की मजबुरीआं भी याद
आँखें थी सोगवार मगर देखते रहे
hai daur-e-bedili ki wo mazburiaan bhee yaad
aankhein thee sogwaar, magar dekhte rahe
[daur = times, bedili = disenchantment, daur-e-bedili = times of disenchatment, mazburiaan = helplessness , sogwaar = sorrowful / greiving]
such helplessness of the disenchanted time I recall
even though the eyes were grieving, I kept looking

हर लहज़ा शान-ए-हुस्न बदलती रही 'जिगर'
हर आन हम जहां-ए-दिगर देखते रहे !
har lahzaa shaan-e-husn badalti rahi 'Jigar'
har aan hum jahaan-e-digar dekhte rahe
[lahzaa = moment / wink of an eye/ glance, shaan = grandure, shaan-e-husn = grandure of beauty, aan = dignity/glory , digar = another. jahaan-e-digar = another /changed world ]
every moment the grandness of beauty kept changing
with dignity, the changing world ,I kept looking

'मुज़्तरिब' दिल की और तिश्नगी आँखों की ऐसी
तस्वीर को उनकी हम रात भर देखते रहे
'Muztarib' dil aur tishnagi aankhon ki aisi
tasveeer ko unki hum raat bhar dekhte rahe
[Muztarib= agitated, tishnagi = thirst]
such was the agitation in heart and thirst of eyes
that picture, whole night, I kept looking
