raha yun he na mukkamal gham-e-ishq ka fasaana
kabhi mujh ko neend aayi, kabhi so gaya zamana

( the story of my pained love remained unfinished,
at times I dozed off, other times the world went asleep )

ye addayein bahki bahki, ye nigaahein shaayrana
ki jahan bhee tumne chaha, wahin ruk gaya zamaana

(with these drunken charms, with these poetic eyes
wherever you wished you made the world came to a still)

tum apne hüsn-e-bekhud ko shikasht se bachana
meri har nazar jalwa hai, mere saamne na aana

(shield your unaware beauty from subjugation
every glance of mine has splendour, do not be in front of me)

Mujhe iska gham nahin hai ki badal gaya zamana,

(am not worried that the world has changed
my life is because of you, lest you change)

wahin jaam me dubo dee, meri mastiyon ne tauba
jo utthi nigaah-e-saaqi mujhe mil gaya zamana

(there only, in the goblet, my exuberence immersed my abstinence
I got the world when the bar-girl raised her eyes )

meri zindagi tera gam, tera gam mataa-e-aalam
mere saath surf tu hai, tere saath hai zamana

(life is sorrows begotten from you, these sorrows are my worldly treasures
I only have you and you have the whole world with you)

hai mujh mein aur tujh mein koi fark tou bas itna
teri zindagi hai haqiqqat meri zindagi fassana

(if there is any difference between you and me, it is this
your life is a reality and mine is a fiction)

Wo abhi gaye hain jaana, issi raaste se ho kar
mere dil ko ye yakin hai ki guzar gaya zamana

(O' dear they have just gone past, by this road
my heart is convinced that the world has crossed away)

Meri zindagi hai 'Iqbaal', inhin dono manzilon mein
kabhi Hans ke aah bharna kabhi ro ke muskaraana

(O Iqbal, your life is limited between these two ends
at times laughing while sighing, at times sobbing while smiling)

'Iqbaal'

Adding my makhta to this ghazal

dil-e-barham ko 'muztarib' kaise hai chain aaya
kabhi tum  ko yaad karna, kabhi hud ko bhool jaana

O 'Muztarib' how did you calm the agitated heart
at times  by thinking about you, at times by forgetting myself

Tujhe yaad kya nahin hai mere dil ka wo zamana

(Seema Anil Sehgal sings 'Tujhe Yaad kya nahin hai')

Tujhe yaad kya nahin hai mere dil ka wo zamana
wo adab gahe muhabbat, wo nigah ka taaziyaanz

Do not you remember, those years of my love
those time of polite intimacy, those whips of amorous glances

[ अस्र = age/time, हाज़िर = present, अदा = elegance, तराश = chiseled; आज़राना = like maiden]

ye butan-e-asr-haazir kee bane hain madrase mein
na adaa-e-kaafirana na tarash-e-aazraanz

These idols of present times are made in factories
devoid of infidel elegance, devoid of chiseled curves of Maiden

[ गोश = ear; फ़रागत = time for rest/comfort]

nahin iss khuli fazaa mein koi gosh-e-faraagat
ye jahan ajab jahan hai, na qafas na aashiyaana

in this clear conditions there is no sound of respite
this world is a strange world; without cage , without home

[ रग -ए-ताक = veins of vine/grapes, मुन्तजिर = awaiting, अजम = Persia;  मुगाना  = fireworshiper]

rag-e-taak muntazir hai teri baarish-e-karam kee
kee azam ke maikadon mein na rahi mai-e-mugaana

the veins of the vine is awaiting the rains of your favor
as the taverns of Persia have gone without the wine of fireworshipperes

mere hamsafar ise bhee asar-e-bahaar samjhe
unhein kya khabar ke kya hai, ye nawaa-e-aashiqana

my fellow travellers attribute it to the spring
they do not know what is this sound of love

[ सिला = a gift/present/return तब-ओ-ताब-ए-जाविदाना = heat and power of eternity/perpetual]

mere khaaq-o-khoon se tune ye jahan kia hai paida
silaa-e-shaheed kya hai tab-o-taab-e-jaawidaana

from my dust and blood you created this world
what gift can a martyr give? the strength and power of eternity

[ बंदा परवरी = looking after the worhsipers / subordinates  गिला = complaint, शिकायत-ए-ज़माना = complain of the times ]

My days are being spent because of your benefecence
Nor I lament about friends nor I have complaint about the time

sitaron ke aagah jahaan aur bhee hai...

Contentment]

[मकामात-ए-आह-ओ-फुगाँ = destination of pain and lamentation ]

[रोज़-ओ-शब् = days and night, ज़मां-ओ-मकां  = time and destination ]

Sitaron Se Aage Jahaan Aur Bhi Hain
Abhi Ishq Ke Imtihan Aur Bhi Hain

Beyond the stars are even more worlds
There are still even more tests of passion

Tihi Zindagi Ke Nahin Yeh Fazaayein
Yahan Sainkadon Kaaravaan Aur Bhi Hain

These expanses are not devoid of life
Here there are hundreds of other caravans too

Qanaa'at Nah Kar Aalam-e-Rang-o-Bu Par
Chaman Aur Bhi, Aashiyaan Aur Bhi Hain!

Don't be contented with the world of color and scent
There are other gardens, other nests (resting places), too

Agar Kho Gaya Ek Nasheman Tho Kya Gham
Muqaamaat-e-Aah-o-Fughaan Aur Bhi Hain!

If a nest (home) was lost, what's the [cause of] grief?
There are other places for sighing and lamenting

Tu Shaaheen Hai, Parvaaz Hai Kaam Tera
Tere Saamne Aasmaan Aur Bhi Hain

You are a falcon, your task is to fly
Before you there are other skies as well to cover

Isi Roz-o-Shab Mein Ulajh Kar Nah Rah Jaa
Kih Tere Zamaan-o-Makaan Aur Bhi Hain
Don't remain entangled, in this day-and-night
For you have other times-and-places too

Gaye Din Ke Tanhaa Thaa Main Anjuman Mein
Yahaan Ab Mere Raaz-Daan Aur Bhi Hain!

The days are gone when I was alone in the gathering
Here, now, I have other secret-sharers too

kabhi aye haqiqat-e-muntazar

(Ustad Nusrta Fateh Ali Khan Sings 'Kabhi aye Haqeeqat")

[हकीकत-ए-मुन्तज़र = The Awaited Reality;  लिबास-ए-मजाज़  = In material robe; ज़बीं-ए-नियाज़= foreheads in supplication]

[ तरब  = pleasure; आशना-ए-खुरूश = friendship with tumult; नवा = sound/tune; सुरूद = melody; सुकूत = silence; पर्दा-ए-साज़ = behind the tune ]

[शिकस्ता = broken; अज़ीज़तर= better; निगाह-ए-आइना साज़ = in the eyes of maker of the mirror  ]

[ दम-ए-तौफ़ = during circumbulation; करमक-ए-शमा = the moth to the fire; असर-ए-कुहन = the old effect; हिकायत-ए-सोज़  = stories of sorrows; हदीस-ए-गुदाज़ = heart melting tales ]

[ अमां  = protection/security; जुर्म-ए-खानाखाराब = crime of destruction; अफ़व-ए-बन्दानवाज़ = in the grace of almighty]

[सर-बसज्दा =head  in prostration; सदा = call/sound; सनम आशना = friends of idols ]

Adding a makhta of my own :

Kabhi Ae Haqiqat-e-Muntazir! Nazar Aa Libaas-e-Majaaz Mein
Ke Hazaar Sajde Tadap Rahe Hain Meri Jabeen-e-Niyaaz Mein

Tarb Ashnay-e-Kharosh Ho, Tu Nawa Hai Mehram-e-Gosh Ho
Woh Surood Kya Ke Chupaa Huwa Ho Sakoot-e-Pardaa-e-Saaz Mein

Tu Bachaa Bachaa Ke Na Rakh Isse, Tera Aaeenaa Hai Woh Aaeenaa
Ke Shikast Ho To Aziztar Hai Nigaah-e-Aaeenaa Saaz Mein

Dam-e-Tauf Karmak-e-Shama Ne Ye Kaha Ke Woh Asar-e-Kahan
Na Teri Hikaayat-e-Soz Mein, Na Meri Hadees-e-Gudaz Mein

Na Kaheen Jahaan Mein Amaan Mili, Jo Amaan Mili To Kahaan Mili
Mere Jurm-e-Khaana Kharab Ko Tere Ufuw-e-Banda Nawaaz Mein

Na Woh Ishq Mein Raheen Garmiyaan, Na Woh Husn Mein Raheen Shokhiyan
Na Woh Ghaznavi Mein Tadap Rahi, Na Kham Hai Zulf-e-Ayaaz Mein

Jo Mein Sar Ba-sajda Huwa Kabhi To Zameen Se Ane Lagi Sada
Tera Dil To Hai Sanam Aashna, Tujhe Kya Mile Ga Namaaz Mein

'Iqbaal'

---

Adding a makhta of my own :

tawaaf-e-dair-o-haram kiye, kabhi suni na apne dil ke sada
tu raha hamesha saath mere , main dhonndhata raha riwaaz mein

----

The below mentioned translation is taken from here

For once, O awaited Reality, reveal Yourself in a form material,
For a thousand prostrations are quivering eagerly in my submissive brow.

Know the pleasure of tumult: thou art a tune consort with the ear!
What is that melody worth, which hides itself in the silent chords of the harp.

Do not try to protect them, your mirror is the mirror
Which would be dearer in the Maker's eye if they broken are

During circumambulation the moth exclaimed, "Those past effects
Neither in your story of pathos, nor in my tale of love are"

My dark misdeeds found no refuge in the wide world
The only refuge they found was in Your Gracious Forgiveness

Neither love has that warmth, nor beauty has that humour
Neither that restlessness in Ghaznavi nor those curls in the hair locks of Ayaz are

Even as I laid down my head in prostration a cry arose from the ground:
Your heart is in materialism, no rewards for your prayers are.

---

I circumbulated the temples and mosques; never did I listen to the call of heart
you were always with me; and I was searching for you in traditions.

digargun hai jahan

(Digargu hai Jahan - sung by Ali Raza)
[दीगरगूं = different/opposite,  गर्दिश = orbit/round , गो = hear, गा-ए-रस्ताखेज़ = sound of surrender, साकी = one who serves the wine in the bar (In sufi Paralance one who provides the knowledge/shows the path: the teacher]

[ मता-ए-दीन-ओ-दानिश = wealth/good things of religion/piety and intellect ; गमजा-ए-खूंरेज़ = blood drenched glance ]

Adding my Makhta to it

[तवाहुम के बारूद = the bomb of blind faith, तश्ना-ए-खूं   = blood thirsty,  शमशीर-ए-चंगेज़ = sword of changez Khan ]

------

I have tried at the literal translation of this Ghazal

the world is reversing, the stars are spinning faster, O saaqi !
heart in every speck hears the sound of surrender, O saaqi !

the bounty of piety and intellect have been stolen from the believers
whose blood drenched amorous glance has caused this apostate act O saaqi !

pain of desire does not arise in the heart of mosque
the origin of it is still shrouded under the veil , O saaqi

There was no other Rumi from the gardens of Azam,
Though the water and skies of Iran is the same, and it’s the same Tabriz , O saaqi !

do not have any expectations, O Iqbaal, from your desolate land
but if little moisten its soil can be really very fertile , O saaqi !

To the travelers on the path of poverty is bestowed the secrets of King
On me is raining this wealth of fortune, O saaqi
------

O Muztarib, the bomb of blind faith is emiting poisonous air
the sword of Changez (Khan) is again blood thirsty, O Saaqi !

-----
Digargun hai jahaan taroon kee gardish tez hai saaqi
dil har zarre mein go ga-e-rasta khez hai saaqi
[Digargun= different/opposite,  gardish  = orbit/round , go = hear, ga-e-rasta khez = sound of surrender]
mata-e-deen-o-daanish lut gayi allah waalon kee
ye kis kaafir adda ka gamza-e-khuurez hai saaqi
[ mata-e-deen-o-daanish = wealth/good things of religion/piety and intellect ; gamza-e-khuurez= blood drenched glance ]
wahi daireena beemari wahi namuhkami dil kee
ilaaz is ka wahi aab -e- nishaatangez hai saqi
[ daireena = old, muhkami = strenght, namuhkami = weakness,aab -e- nishaatangez  = water that give happiness (wine) ]
haram ke dil mein soz-e-aarzu paida nahin hota
kee paidaii teri ab tak hizaab aamez hai saaqi
[ haram  = moseque, soz-e-aarzu = heat/pain of desire, hizaab aamez = within veil ]
wahi aab-o-gil-e-iraan wahi tabrez hai saaqi
[ laalazaron = gardens, aab-o-gil-e-iraan = water and sky of Iran, tabrez = City in Iran]
zaraa nam ho tou yeh mitti bahut zarkhez hai saaqi
[kist= agricultural land, zarkhez = fertile ]
faqeer-e-raah ko bakshe gaye asraar-e-sultaanii
baha meri nawa kee daultein parvez hai saaqi
[faqeer-e-raah = one who walk the path of poverty, asraar-e-sultaanii= secret of king, ]
Iqbaal
--------

Adding my makhta to this

Muztarib nikal raha hai zehrila dhuaan tavaaham ke baarud se
tashna-e-khun aaj phir shamshir-e-changez hai saaqi
[tavaaham ke baarud = the bomb of blind faith, tashna-e-khun  = blood thirsty,  shamshir-e-changez = sword of changez Khan ]

---------

I am putting below an interpretation of this by Prof Shahid Alam

The world changes utterly: the stars spin faster, O Saqi.
In every heart I hear the cry of surrender, O Saqi.

God’s journeymen have lost their arts, their certainty.
Whose artifice deceives them, who has this power, O Saqi.

Weak-willed, weak-hearted, dimly they mope about.
Deep is their need for that life-enhancing elixir, O Saqi.

The Muslim lacks the fire that can ignite his heart.
Why is the birth of spirit so hard to deliver, O Saqi.

There rises none like Rumi from the gardens of ‘Ajam.
Persia is the same, unchanged her sky and water, O Saqi.

Iqbal will not walk away from his fields laid waste.
A little dew and sweat will revive its power, O Saqi.

This dervish is privy to the rites, the rigors of power.
His words are rare, he ignites visions of splendor, O Saqi.

A rough Translation is given below

When Love teaches the ways of self realization
the divine secrets are revealed to the fettered

Characters of strong men are truth telling and fearlessness
the Lions of God know no tricks or deception

O divine bird ! Death is better than that subsistence
the subsistence which hinders you from  soaring high

Be is Attar or Rumi or Razi or Ghazalli
Nothing was achieved without the guidance of dawnlight

That Fakir is better  than Darius and Alexander
whose poverty has the fragrance of Asadullah (Ali)

Not be without hope O wise guide !
though slow paced are the travelers but not without zeal.

(sung by Ustad Sadeq Fetrat Nashnas who is a very famous Pashto Singer from Afghanistan)

[ गुलज़ार-ए-हस्त-ओ-बूद = garden of past and future , बेगानावार = as stranger]

[मिसाल-ए-शरार = like a lightening, हस्ती-ए-नापायेदार = ephemeral life,  दम दे न जाए = deceit]

[ज़ौक-ए-दीद = joy of sight, रहगुज़र = road,  नक़्श-ए-कफ-ए-पा-ए-यार = image of foot print of beloved ]

A rough translation is given below

look not at the garden of existence as stranger
it is a thing worth admiring, look at it again and again

you have come into the world like a spark, beware
lest your ephemeral life may deceit you, beware

granted that I may not worthy of your sight
look at my passion, and look at my perseverance

if your eyes have been opened by the longing for sight
look for the foot prints of the beloved in every lane

Putting below is a rough translation of this:

Song of Hind

the best in whole world is my hindustaan
we are its nightingale and this garden is our home

even in exile our heart is at home
and we are there where our heart is

the loftiest of the mountains, the friend of sky
is our sentry, is our guard

thoushand of river plays in her bosom
our garden is an envy to the heaven

O flowing water of Ganges! did you recall the day
when our caravan had landed at your shore

religion doesnt teach animosity amongst kins
we all are Hindi and our nation is Hindustaan

Greeks, Coptics and Romans have become history
but we still have name and existence

there is something which keeps us going
despite many in world being our foes for centuries

Iqbaal there is no sympathiser to us
does anyone know our hidden pain ?
