Banjaranama (Chronicle of the Nomad)

I discovered 'Nazir' through this brilliant Nazm. Nazir was born as  Wali Muhammad in around 1735. He lived a long life of around 95 years. Fame eluded him through out his long life. It was 200 years later when brilliance of Nazir came in prominence. 'Banjaranama' is one of his most famous poems.
In this poem Nazir talks about two Nomads; one the human being and other the death. In very simple verses he reminds superficiality of life and permanence of death. I Have tried to put a rough translation of this poem.

For a while shed the greed and the lust, O Mister, wonder not hither and  thither
Beating his drums, the bandit of death, robs day and night
what of your bulls, buffaloes, ox and camels? what of yours bag bushels and cans?
what of your wheat, rice, peas and pulses? what of your fire, smoke and sparks
All your splendour will go waste when the pedlar packs and leaves.

If you are a millionaire nomad, and your stores are brimming,
Know, O ignorant! There is another merchant who is even greater than you.
What of your sugar, candy, jaggery and nuts? What of your doughs, sweet and salty?
What of your grapes, raisins, ginger and pepper? What of your saffron, cloves and betel?
All your splendor will get wasted when the pedlar packs and leaves.

With your Oxen and Bulls laden, when you go east and west
either you get a hefty profit or you suffer a heavy loss
but when the bandit of death slays you in  the way with his spear
then what of your wealth and children even the community is of no help
All your splendor will get wasted when the pedlar packs and leaves.

while walking in your way when your bag is lost
then not even a bull will come to graze on your soil
the trip that your have loaded will get distributed in parts
what of your daughter, son, son-in-law; not even your wife would come near
All your splendour will get wasted when the pedlar packs and leaves

At every destination of yours rests with you the gold coins,
the earthen pot of gold and silver ; shot gun, shield and double edge sword
but when the leader of the body, that roams country to country, leaves,
then there will be neither the cooking pot  nor the container, nor the porridge nor the rice
All your splendour will get wasted when the pedlar packs and leaves

you are going for this trip loaded , do not count this trip of yours
now at any moment of time this trip will become the shroud on your body
what of the plates and cups of silver and what of your brass candle holder
what of the gold silver utensils what of the pot and ladle made of earth
All your splendour will get wasted when the pedlar packs and leaves

with all this hullabaloo why do you wander from one Forest to another
not even a twig will go with you when the food and water will stop
what of the house, the attic, the courtyard what of your special specs, and silk
what of the veil, cover, floor and new red bed and colourful palace
All your splendour will get wasted when the pedlar packs and leaves

nothing will be of use, not your rubies and Sapphire nor your gold and silver
when the wealth will get distributed every splendour will be life taking
drums big and small, arrows, standards, wealth, batteries of servants, armies, legions
what of couch, pillow, estate? what guard post, chair, throne, straw hut ?
All your splendour will get wasted when the pedlar packs and leaves

why do you take heavy load on your heart,
when the death pitches its tent then the buyers will make double profit
what  of embedded jewels, gold  and jewellery? what of the cloths with embroidered strip
what horses with golden saddle, what elephants with red howdah
All your splendour will get wasted when the pedlar packs and leaves

do not be proud of your sword, do not rely on the shield
all will run breaking their collor, on seeing the spear of death
what boxes of pearls and diamonds? what piles of treasures and wealth
what of sacs of clothes embroidered with tree patterns?what of the woollen shawl
All your splendour will get wasted when the pedlar packs and leaves

there you are making a firm house and here  the pillar of your body is week
your are raising high battlement and there the deep grave is agape
what of parapet, moat, large canon holes? what of  minaret and priceless tower
what of garrisons, wall ,tanks and forts what of  lead, gunpowder and canon
All your splendour will get wasted when the pedlar packs and leaves

why do you keep wondering hither tither for profit and loss
just think, O ignorant, your enemy is ever following you
what of the maiden, harlot and old maid; what of the lackey, servant and moral conduct
what of the mosque, the temple,  the lake and the well; what of the the land, flowers and gardens
All your splendour will get wasted when the pedlar packs and leaves

when death, with its hunter, drives  your body like an Ox
some will run for your crown some will stitch your bags
and you will  be lain alone in the forest biting the dust of your tomb
and in that jungle, alas 'Nazeer' even a twig will not care about you
All your splendour will get wasted when the pedlar packs and leaves

tuk hirs-o-hawas ko chod mian, mat des bides phire maara

sab thaath pada rah jaayegaa jab laad chalegaa banjaara

Har manzil mein ab sath tere ye jinia dera daanda hai
Zarr, daam, diram ka bhaanda hai, bandooq, sipar aur khaanda hai
Jab nayak tan ka nikal gya,jo mulkon mulkon baanda hai
Phir haanda hai na bhaanda hai, na halwa hai na maanda hai
Sab thath para rah jayega jab laad chale ga banjaara

ye khep bhare jo tu jaata hai, ye khep mian mat gin apni
ab koi ghadi pal ssat mein ye khep badan kee hai kafni
kya thaal katori chaandi kee, kya peetal kee dibiya dhakni

sab thaath pada rah jaawega jab laad chalega banjaara,

ye dhoom dhadakka liye kyun firta hai jangal jangal

kya chilman, parde, farsh naye kya laal palang aur rang mahal
sab thaath pada rah jaawega jab laad chalegaa banjaara

kuch kaam na aawegaa tere ye laal-o-jamrood seem-o-zar

kya masnad, takiaa, mulk makaan, kya chauki, kursi, takth, chatar

kyaa sakht makaan banwaata hai khambh tera tan ka pola hai
kya rainee, khadak, rand bade, kya burj , kangoora anmola
gadh, kot, rahkalaa, top kilaa, kya seesha daaru aur gola
sab thaath pada rah jaawega jab laad chalega banjaara

har aan naffe aur totte mein kyun marta phirta hai ban ban
tuk gaafil dil mein soch zara hai saath laga tera dushman
kya laundi, baandi, daai, didaa kya banda chela nek-chalan
kya masjid, mandir, taal, kuaan kya khetibaadi, phool, chaman
sab thaath pada rah jaawegaa jab laad chalega banjaara

koi taaj sametega tera koi gaun siye aur taankegaa
ho der akela zangal mein tu khaakh lahad kee faankegaa
sab thaath bada rah jaayega jab laad chalega banjaara.

kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai

[ शादाब = verdant; blooming; तीरगी = darkness, जीस्त = life; शुआओं  = darkness; जमाल = beauty; गुदाज़ = soft/molten, तल्खियां = bitterness, हलावत = sweetness/relish/deliciousness; हयात = life, बरहना = naked/uncovered ]

Kabhi Kabhi mere dil mein khyaal aata hai
Kee zindagee teri zulfon kee narm chaon mein guzarne paati to shaadab ho bhee sakti thee
yeh teergee jo meri zeest ka muqaddar hai teri nazar kee shuaaon mein kho bhee sakti thee
ajab na tha kee main begaana-e-aalam ho kar teri jamaal kee raanaaiyon mein kho rehta
tera gudaaz badan teri neembaar aankhein inhi haseen fazaaon mein maaho rehta
pukaartee jab mujhe talkhiyan zamaane kee tere labon se halaawat ke ghunt pee leta
hayat cheekhti phirti barhanaa sar aur main ghaneri zulfon ke saaye mein chup kar jee leta
[ Shaadaab= verdant; blooming; teergee = darkness, zeest = life; Shuaaon = darkness; Jamaal = beauty; gudaaz = soft/molten, talkhiyaan = bitterness, halaawat = sweetness/relish/deliciousness; hayat = life, barhanaa = naked/uncovered ]
magar yeh ho na sakaa aur ab ye aalam hai kee tu nahin, tera gam teri zustujuu bhee nahin
guzar rahi hai kuch iss tarah se zindagee meri jaise isse kisi sahare kee aarzoo bhee nahin
zamaane bhar ke dukhon ko laga chuka hoon gale, guzar raha hoon kisi anzaani guzargaahon se
muheeb saaye meri simt badhe aate hain, hayat-e-maut ke purhaul kharzaaron se
inhin khaloon mein rah jaaonga kahin khokar, main jaanta hoon meri humnafas magar yun hee
[guzargaah = road/path, Muheeb = dreadful/formidable, simt = towards; purhaul = terrifying, jaadaa = pathway/road; khalaa = hollowness/vacuum ]

kabhi Kabhi mere dil mein khayal aata hai..

Saahir 'Ludhyaanwi'

I have attempted a translation to this Nazm. Putting it down below:

 At times I wonder..

That If I could have lived in the shadows of your soft tresses then life could have blossomed
this darkness, which is now my destiny, could have disappeared in the darkness of your eyes
its probable that I Could have forgotten the world and have got lost in the mischievous beauty of yours
I could have immersed myself in pleasures  such as your soft body and your dark eyes
whenever the bitterness of the world come calling for me I could have gulped the sweetness from your lips
Life could be screaming and searching for me and I could have lived,  hiding in the dense dark tresses of yours

but alas! this didn't happen and now  neither you, nor your sorrow, nor your quest is there with me
life is moving as though it does not desire any love
all the sorrows I have taken upon me and am wondering through unknown paths
dreadful shadows keep advancing towards me from the terrifying ruins of life and death
there is no road, no lights, neither any clue of the destination, life is meandering in the emptiness
and in this emptiness I shall be lost, I know  my dear, but just like that

 At times I wonder..

Chandani Raatein

Pandit Vithal Rao- Chandani Raatein

Madam Noor Jahan - Chandani Raatein (Movie: Duppata)

Ik chameli ke mandve tale

( Pandit Vithal Rao Sings 'Ik Chameli ke Mandave tale')

[ मंडवे = shed, bower, an arbour]

[harf = letters of word]

[सुबुकरौ  = fast walker, सर्फ-ए-मातम = extravagent in tragedy, रुखसार  = cheeks]

ik chamelii ke mandwe tale
maikade se zaraa door us mod par
do badan pyaar ki aag mein jal gaye
ik chamelii ke mandwe tale

[ mandwe = shed, bower, an arbour]

pyaar harf-e-wafaa, pyaar unkaa Khudaa
pyaar unki Kitaab
do badan pyaar ki aag mein jal gaye
ik chamelii ke mandwe tale

[harf = letters of word]

os mein bheegte, chaandni mein nahaate huye
jaise do taazaa-ruh taazaa-dam phool pichhle pahar
thandi thandi subuk rau chaman ki hawaa
sarf-e-maatam huyi
kaali-kaali laton se lipat, garm rukhsaar par
ek pal ke liye ruk gayi
do badan pyaar ki aag mein jal gaye
ik chamelii ke mandwe tale

[subuk rau = fast walker, sarf-e-maatam = extravagent in tragedy, rukhsaar = cheeks]

hamne dekhaa unhen din mein aur raat mein ,
noor-o-zulmaat mein
masjidon ke minaaron ne dekhaa unhen
mandiron ke kivaadon ne dekhaa unhen
maikade ki daraadon ne dekhaa unhen
do badan pyaar ki aag mein jal gaye
ik chamelii ke mandwe tale

ye bataa chaaraagar teri zambeel mein
nuskaa-e-keemiyaa-e-muhabbat bhi hai
kuchh ilaaj-o-mudaavaa-e- ulfat bhi hai
do badan pyaar ki aag mein jal gaye
ik chamelii ke mandwe tale

[Zambeel = basket,  keemiyaa= chemistry, mudaawamat = perpetuity, eternity, ulfat = love]

Makhdoom Moiuddin

I am putting below a rough translation of this ghazal:

some distance from the tavern, near the bend of the road
two bodies got burnt in the fire of love
below the arbor of the jasmine tree

love meant  fidelity, love meant god
love a book  for them
two bodies got burnt in the fire of love
below the arbor of the jasmine tree

drenched in dew and bathing in the moonlight
like two pure souls of fresh flowers of the last evening
the cold and swift wind of the garden
got extravagent in tragedy
when entagled in the dark tresses, on those warm cheeks
got stopped for a moment
two bodies got burnt in the fire of love
below the arbor of  the jasmine tree
we have seen them in days and in nights
in light and in dark
the minarets of mosques have seen them
the facades of temples have seen them
the cleft of taverns have seen them
two bodies got burnt in the fire of love
below the arbor of the jasmine tree
tell me O healer, in your basket
is there a medicine for chemistry of love
or any treatment for perpetual love
two bodies got burnt in the fire of love
below the arbor of the jasmine tree

Kutte

halka halka suroor rehta hai..

[उदी = purple, घटायें = clouds,मुतरिबों = musicians,नवायें = music, गेसू = tresses, सहन-ए-चमन = backyard of garden, रस्क = dance; ज़ुल्मत = darkness, नूर = light]

Below is a nazm by 'Faiz'. The translation is by Kuldeep Salil.

Ask me not for love, O dear like before

[दरखशां = bright, हयात = life, गम-ए-दहर = sorrows of life, सबात = permanence/stability ]

With you around, I had thought, life is all aglow,
when I sorrow for you, I need not bother about the sufferings of the world
your beauty gives permanence to the spring season
that nothing else is worthwhile in the world except your eyes, so I had thought

But that is not it;
There are other sorrows too in world, apart from the sorrows of love
and other joy beside the joys of union

रेशम-ओ-अतलस-ओ-कमख्वाब = silk and satin and brocade, जा-बा-जा = here and there
कूचा-ओ-बाज़ार = lanes and markets]

A web of brutal darkness woven over centuries,
human bodies on sale in the street and the market place,
bodies bathed in dust and blood

Diseased bodies with festering wounds
The eye is arrested by all this, it cannot help;
your beauty though is as attractive as before

There are other sorrows also in the world beside the sorrows of love
and othe joys apart from joys of union
do not ask me, dear, for love like before.
